Deciding just to wing it…
In trying to make my travel plans to Mexico, I hit a roadblock. I just couldn’t commit to anything other than a couple of nights in Tulum at a little downtown establishment. And even then, I just sent a $30 deposit on PayPal, so if I blow that off, it’s no big deal. Since it’s been a year-and-a-half since I’ve been to Mexico, I searched and searched for places I might want to stay but couldn’t make a commitment. I’m afraid to submit deposits and payments without really being sure of what I’m doing. I don’t want to get there and then discover that I don’t want to stay at a place that I’ve already paid for…and then feeling like I’ve wasted my time there. On that note, I’ve decided to stop trying to plan my trip. People have told me that the fun of a vacation is in its planning. Well, this is one vacation in which the fun is in NOT planning. The one safe thing I have going for me is that it’s low season and I’m not worried about getting a room somewhere…I know I’ll be able to find something. And that’s what’s kind of exciting about this trip. No plans…no commitments…no worries. (Kind of like “No shirt…no shoes…no problem”…haha!) Just a gal who wants to get away for a little adventure without restrictions. That would be me. I guess we’ll see.
Where to go?
I still haven’t decided where to go on my trip. I want to explore the Yucatan as much as possible in nine days, but I also want some relaxation. With the job promotion, all work and no play has left Deb a pretty dull girl. So, I’ve checked some hotels and googled some locations…and still can’t commit to anything. After some consideration of renting a car at the Cancun airport, I decided against it after reading some pretty bad reviews. I still think I will rent one, but at a location other than Cancun.
I will probably continue my tradition of heading first to Puerto Morelos for just two nights. I like the fact that it’s only a 20 minute ride from the airport and it’s so laid back and quiet. PoMo definitely has a charm to me, not to mention their great snorkeling reef. I could use some snorkeling about now.
I’m also thinking of spending a couple nights in the city of Tulum. I’ve been to the ruins, and through the city on a bus, but haven’t spent any time there. (By the way, the pictures on this post have all been taken from Google Images.)
After that, I’m just not sure. When Border’s bookstore was closing in Austin, I found a map of the Yucatan for just a couple of bucks. There are so many areas in the peninsula where there is nothing…with small towns sprinkled in between. In my last post, Helen commented that I should consider Izamal. I Googled it and found that all the buildings in this town are painted yellow. That certainly would provide some great photo ops.

I would like to see both of these places, but their distant locations will probably prohibit visiting them on this round.
I had planned on a Mexico visit last summer, but my busy schedule wouldn’t allow it. One of the things I wanted to do then was visit the remaining ruins that you are still allowed to climb…such as Coba…

And Uxmal…
Close to Uxmal is a little hotel called the Flycatcher Inn. It looks like a pretty unique place, but I would definitely need to rent a car if I stayed there. I’m also thinking it may be too hot to go traipsing up three different ruins in the Yucatan. After just one, I might call it a day. Or they may find my body at the top of Ek Balam as a personal sacrifice to the sun god…haha!

Even though it will be hot in August, one good thing is that all of the hotels have vacancies because it is the low season. So even if I don’t commit to anything before I leave, I won’t have to worry about not having a place to stay and can just play things by ear. What an adventure!
